Swami's is probably the most famous landmark in Encinitas to outsiders. There is a small park area with limited parking at the top of the cliff. You take a very long and somewhat treacherous staircase down to the sand. The bottom part of the stairs are made of wood and can get slippery due to all the surfers so take caution especially with children lest they slip and fall to their deaths'. The beach is nice but not special except for some rocks that are sometimes exposed like mini tide pools.
This is probably the best spot between Oceanside and Mission Beach to catch a glimpse of a bum. So if you hail from Santa Monica or other bum-rich areas and are a bit homesick, keep the cameras at the ready.
If you are in the area, I recommend the appropriately named Swami's Cafe for a relaxing breakfast or lunch. Although Swami's Cafe would never be featured in a case study in queue service efficiency, the prices can't be beat and the food is good. The cafe is located across Highway 101 and a couple blocks north of the Swami's Beach. Parking can be a pain sometimes.
